This is the oldest functioning Hindu temple in Malaysia. It is also reputed to be the richest in the country. The temple was originally sited somewhere near the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station. It shifted to its present location along Jalan Tun H.S. Lee (next to KL’s Chinatown) in 1885.

The initial attap structure was demolished in 1887 and a brick building was erected in its place. The new temple was consecrated in 1973.

Mariamman is popularly worshipped by overseas Indians, especially Tamils because she is looked upon as their protector during their sojourn to foreign lands. Mariamman is a manifestation of the goddess – Parvati, an incarnation embodying Mother Earth with all her terrifying force. She protects her devotees from unholy or demonic events.

“I love the colours and architecture of hindu temples! This one was wonderful since we got to walk around and observe the customs and traditions of the hindu culture. There is a place right outside the temple to put your shoes which costs 20ringgit per pair since you are not allowed to carry your shoes around the temple. Definitely a temple to visit!”

“My husband and I visited the tower today and really enjoyed the view. We only paid to go to the first level which I think was about 250m up. We didn’t pay the extra to go higher up level and did not feel like we missed out on anything.

The view was great and you can easily get a good photo of the Twin Towers from the first level.

I was surprised that there were no signs saying what each building was so there was a bit of guess work involved to work out work out what everything was.

I would recommend coming here early on in your visit to KL to get your bearings.”
